Life-sized figures in a sculptural installation - 22' radius
No Child Left Behind, 2004
privately commissioned, Hamilton High School, Hamilton, OH
This commission is comprised of nine, life-sized, bronze figures in various
poses (seated, standing, kneeling) arranged on or around granite benches such
that viewers can become part of the sculpture. At first glance, a piece of
traditional commemorative sculpture, the variety of poses and the space they
occupy provide many opportunities for interaction with the figures. It was
very important to me that people realize that they are permitted to touch
these pieces. The president is at the podium, but he is still close to the
group listening to him (he too is a citizen). People are invited to come into
the sculpture, sit down with the bronze figures, lounge, relax, etc. All of
the individuals portrayed are actual people. The piece commemorates the
signing of the Education Bill by President George W. Bush at Hamilton High
School in Hamilton, OH. It is the only sculpture of its kind to be located at
a secondary school in the United States according to the Superintendent of the
Hamilton City Schools.
